Anna Sorokin (born January 23, 1991)[2], better known as Anna Delvey, born Anna Vadimovna Sorokina (Russian: Анна Вадимовна Сорокина)[1], is a German-Russian woman who was involved in the socialite scene in Manhattan. In 2019, she was convicted of multiple counts of attempted grand larceny, theft of services and larceny in the second degree for scamming wealthy New York City business acquaintances and several hotels.

Early life and education

Sorokin was born in Domodedovo[1] near Moscow,[3] in the Soviet Union, in 1991. She was one of the two children in the family[1]. Before the family moved to Germany, Anna’s father Vadim Sorokin worked as a truck driver and her mother owned a small convenience store, but later became a housewife[1]. The family moved to Cologne, Germany in 2007 when Anna was 16.[3] She attended high school in Eschweiler, near the German-Belgian-Dutch border, and was described by classmates as a quiet girl who had a difficult time with the German language. Sorokin graduated from gymnasium in 2011 and then moved to London to attend the Central Saint Martins art school, but did not finish and returned to Germany.[4]

Career

Sorokin started as an intern at a public relations firm in Germany and then moved to Paris to become an intern for Purple, a French fashion, art and culture magazine and soon changed her name to Anna Delvey.[4]

Arrest and fame

In 2017, she was arrested on six charges of grand larceny for allegedly scamming wealthy New York City business acquaintances and several hotels.[5][6] According to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, the damage might be as high as $275,000.[7]

Delvey initially faced three counts of misdemeanour theft of services due to complaints regarding stays at the Beekman Hotel and the W Downtown as well as a meal at the Parker Méridien hotel in New York.[8]

Her life as one of Manhattan's socialites has been covered prominently before and after her arrest. In 2018, New York published a profile about her life, business dealings, and arrest.[4] Shonda Rhimes acquired the rights to the New York magazine profile and is developing a Netflix Original series based on it.[9] Lena Dunham is reported to be working on a separate project about Delvey, based on an account in Vanity Fair.[10]

Trial

On December 18, 2018, Delvey appeared in New York City Criminal Court and rejected a plea deal that would have her released from jail and deported back to Germany in early 2019. Delvey decided to go to trial and a March 20, 2019 date was initially set by Judge Diane Kiesel.[11] Jury selection began during the week of March 17th. On April 25, 2019, a jury found Delvey guilty of second-degree larceny, theft of services and one count of first-degree attempted grand larceny.[12] Delvey was not found guilty in another charge of attempted grand larceny in the first degree for an attempted $22 million loan she tried to procure and a charge of theft of $60,000 for a Morocco trip.[12] She is scheduled to be sentenced on May 9, 2019 and faces up to 15 years in prison.[12][13] ICE has confirmed that she will be deported at some point due to her visa waiver overstay https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Delvey
