Soap actor Nick Santino committed suicide last week, shortly after putting his dog to sleep.
Santino said he was pressured to put his five-year-old pit bull named Rocco to sleep by the management in his apartment building. The actor told his loved ones he "betrayed my best friend” when he put Rocco to sleep last Tuesday.
The New York Post reports that Santino wrote a suicide note that read “Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend. Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.”
Santino, whose television credits include All My Children and Guiding Light, had adopted Rocco years ago.
“I did not rescue Rocco, Rocco rescued me," he wrote on his Facebook account after the adoption from a shelter.
After he moved in, a ban on pit bulls in his Upper West Side apartment building was implemented, but it did not include the dogs that were there before the new rule.
Santino started to become harassed by neighbors after the ban was set forth, even being threatened with a $250 fine for dog barking when friends said that Rocco never even barked.
People reports that Rocco was euphonized last Tuesday, which was Santino’s 47th birthday. He then placed panicked call to a former girlfriend around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, and was found dead in his apartment building that afternoon.
Santino will be buried with Rocco, according to his sister.
